"Njursjukdomar är relativt vanligt förekommande hos hund och ses oftast hos äldre djur. Unga hundar och valpar kan även drabbas och då rör det sig ofta om en medfödd njursjukdom. Under årens lopp har dessa medfödda njursjukdomar givits olika beteckningar som med största sannolikhet beskriver en och samma defekt. Som exempel kan nämnas: njurbarkshypoplasi hos cocker spaniel, familjär njursjukdom hos norsk älghund och samojed, progressiv njursjukdom hos lhasa apso, shih tzu och soft coated wheaten terrier. Progressiv nefropati, eller renal dysplasi som den också kallas, är en defekt där hunden föds med underutvecklade njurar. Ett antal nefroner, vilka är de minsta funktionella enheterna i en njure, når av någon okänd anledning inte full mognad. Detta leder till att dessa njurar aldrig får full kapacitet t.ex. vad gäller rening av kroppens avfallsprodukter eller produktion av hormonet erytropoetin," och vidare:
"I forskningsrapporten om progressiv nefropati hos shih tzu från 1990 finns även en ärftlighetsstudie. I denna studie kunde man, hos shih tzu, verifiera hypotesen att sjukdomen har en enkel recessiv arvsgång. Det föreligger ingen könsdisposition.
Studien visade att nästan alla hundar med progressiv nefropati var nära besläktade med varandra och att 30 av 37 fall kunde förklaras genom släktskap till två hundar."

SWEDEN.
AS TO PNP THE MODE OF INHERITANCE IS NOT KNOWN AT ALL.
THIS MOTION IS IRRELEVANT."
With this information, delivered by one of the members,
NOT by a specialist, NOT even by a vet, at the annual meeting of the Cocker
Spanielklubben on March 25, 2006,
the assembly of 40 members voted against
Motion for reactivating the resolution
already passed to launch a full controll/health program for FN/PNP,
a motion supported and signed by 97 cocker spaniel breeders/owners, some of whom
attending the meeting.

A pity that Swedish cocker spaniel breeders/owners
have no use of the ARHN (former FN)-gene-test, after
"Dr Keith Murphy's laboratory identified the genetic cause of autosomal
recessive hereditary nephropathy (ARHN) in the English Cocker Spaniel."
Sweden seems to be the only country in the world where FN does not exist.
Even dogs that we import from the UK, with FN in their bloodlines and who turn
out to have produced FN in the UK;
even they do not produce FN in Sweden! They produce PNP. And very young
cocker spaniels keep dying.
And there is nothing that forbids breeders to use these dogs.

than 50 years ago."

And in 2007 there is no disease called PNP any more, not even in Sweden.

VetGen, Michigan, USA,
that has announced a linked marker test to help reduce the incidence of RENAL
DYSPLASIA in Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso and Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers
(is this disease the same as the one Astrid Hoppe calls 'PROGRESSIV NJURSJUKDOM'
in the above extract?), claims "the underlying genetic
mechanism is not relevant".

Dictionary Unabridged the adjective familial
(from Latin familia, a family) means
of, involving, or common to a family
whereas the adjective familiar
(from O French familier; Latin familiaris)
means
of or pertaining to a household, domestic, specifically the following meanings
1 pertaining to a family; domestic
2 Having, characterized by, or arising from close acquaintance; intimate; not
distant
3 closely acquainted; knowing by frequent use or association
4 too friendly; presumptuous; unduly intimate or bold
5 well-known; common; ordinary
6 domesticated: said of animals
In English/Swedish dictionaries the adjective
familial should be
translated familje-
and
the adjective familiar
is translated
1 bekant; (väl)känd 2 vanlig 3 (familiar with) förtrogen med 4 informell,
familjär, förtrolig;
närgången
varav följer att familial INTE betyder familjär!
... precis som
various colours INTE betyder
alla färger!
